Organic chemistry
Organic chemistry asks you to remember families of molecules, mechanisms and selectivity rules. Lumi brings them back in a spiral so you recognise a mechanism the moment you see a molecule.

How to turn this subject into cards
Organise organic chemistry by functional group, alcohols, alkenes, haloalkanes, carbonyls. For each, a card set for naming, one for reactivity, and one per reaction with its reagents, conditions and product. The trap is learning isolated reactions when mechanisms are what connect them. Tie each reaction to the logic of electron movement. Lumi asks for the product, the reagent or the name of the rule, and re-asks what slips away. Cramming into one evening gave a more fragile result than spreading study out in a vocabulary experiment (Kornell, 2009). It helps you remember names, reactions, rules and conditions.

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2. An alcohol contains a hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon. An SN2 reaction happens in one step with inversion of configuration. Markovnikov’s rule says that in the addition of HX to an alkene, the hydrogen adds to the carbon that already has more hydrogens. A chiral carbon has four different substituents.
Lumi’s question
