Physics

In physics you remember laws, their formulas, units and orders of magnitude. Lumi has you restate each from memory so a problem statement immediately tells you what to reach for.

How to turn this subject into cards

Split your physics by chapter, then by law. For each law, one card for the statement in words, one for the formula with its quantities and units, one for the conditions under which it applies. The classic trap is remembering the formula without the unit, which costs marks on a final answer. Add the orders of magnitude, such as the speed of light or the acceleration due to gravity. Lumi quizzes you on all of this and comes back to what you hesitate over. What you produce yourself sticks better than what you read (Slamecka and Graf, 1978). It helps you remember laws, formulas and units.

Newton’s second law says force equals mass times acceleration. Kinetic energy equals one half m v squared. The speed of light in a vacuum is about 3 times 10 to the power 8 metres per second. On Earth the acceleration due to gravity is about 9.8 metres per second squared. Momentum is mass times velocity and is conserved in a closed system.
